FAQ

1. What does KDL Construction’s concierge-level service mean for homeowners?

Our goal  at KDL Construction is to remove as much of the stress from the remodeling or building process as possible. First of all, we believe communication is key to your satisfaction when making one of the biggest investments of your lifetime. We guide you seamlessly from initial concept through occupancy and handle all the details of your design work, your selections, your estimates and your build. We can’t promise things will go perfectly, but we can promise you that you will feel informed and educated about options as we work through your build together.

2. Can KDL Construction help with the design and planning process, or do I need to hire a designer separately?

We believe that when designers and contractors are on the same team, our clients get the best results. Our design process involves both parties – so the design is informed by construction requirements. You will meet with your contractor and designer at our initial consultation where we will talk through the benefits of utilizing our partnered design team.

3. How does KDL Construction develop project budgets and help clients manage costs?

The most important thing you can do is have a realistic budget number in mind when you come to our original consultation. We understand that you may have no idea what the project may cost, but you do know what you can afford. In our initial consultation, we can provide a ballpark range for your project, but your design and selection choices will have a large impact on where the actual estimate lands. After you go through your design process and selections are complete, we will take our trade partners to your home to develop your proposal. We don’t just guess what we think it will cost, we encourage our trade partners to see the actual space and see where potential complications – and more expense – may arise. We make every attempt to remove surprises by inspecting your space as thoroughly as possible.

4. How long does a typical remodeling or home addition project take?

You will  spend more time than you imagined on planning. The design, selections and estimating process takes at least two months or more depending on the complexity of your project. We believe that detailed planning makes for a better build – the project runs more smoothly, more efficiently and costs less in the long run. As far as actual construction: A small bathroom remodel can take 8-12 weeks, a kitchen remodel can take 12 – 24 weeks, a new construction home can take 8-12 months or more.

5. Who will be my main point of contact, and how will I stay informed throughout construction?

Your building contractor will be your main point of contact throughout the project. At different times, you will be spending more time with other team members, depending on where we are in the project. Every day that there is work happening in your home, one of our team will visit the site. Our team meets weekly to discuss your project, and we are on the phone with each other several times a day. We use JobTread as our main portal for design choices, selections, proposals, schedules and daily communication logs. You will have your own dedicated portal in JobTread to stay informed about all the aspects of your project.

6. How does KDL Construction help clients select materials, fixtures, finishes, and other details?

You will be working with our designer to select cabinets, lighting and plumbing fixtures, countertops, tile, and flooring at our showroom, The Builders Studio in Greenville NC. Any finish you have in your home can be found in one convenient location, meaning you won’t have to run all over town to see and pick what you are placing in your home.

7. How does KDL Construction ensure quality craftsmanship and accountability throughout a project?

Our team works together on every project we do. We use the same trade partners exclusively – so we know how to work together to bring you the best outcome for your vision. Our trade partners stand behind their work – if something goes wrong, and it occasionally does, our team will make it right.

8. Can I remain in my home while remodeling is underway, and how does KDL minimize disruption?

It depends on the scope of your project and how much of your house we are working in. For a whole home remodel, we encourage you to find a short term rental. Whole home remodels are complex, disruptive, loud and dusty. We can work more efficiently and cost effectively if we can have access to all areas of your home. Let us worry about the day to day details while you carry on with your busy life in a less stressful environment. Bathrooms and kitchens can be done with you remaining in your home, and we can guide you on how to set up temporary arrangements.

9. How far in advance should I contact KDL Construction, and what should I have ready before our first consultation?

For one room remodels, contact us 3 to 6 months before you want to begin. For whole home remodels or custom home construction, contact us 6 to 12 months in advance. Proper planning takes longer than most people think, and we are all dependent on the schedules of surveyors, designers and trade partners. We encourage you to bring pictures of your existing space on a phone or tablet, have some general ideas about what would make your space work better for your life (or what isn’t working for you now), and an idea of what you would like to spend.

10. What types of projects does KDL Construction take on, and which areas do you serve?

KDL Construction has an unlimited license, meaning we are financially qualified to build a project of any size or dollar value. We remodel kitchens, baths, and whole homes. We build additions and we take on a limited number of custom new homes each year. We primarily serve Pitt County, but we will take on select projects in Washington, Goldsboro and Carteret County.
